If Romeo and Juliet we’re alive, Tony and Maria and their warring gangs would give this English couple and their feuding clans a run for their money, for what these New Yorkers lack in grace, manners and refinement, they all more than make up for it in dancing, or to be specific, dynamic and heart stopping dancing that raised the benchmark for other musicals and changed people’s perceptions and expectations of such stage productions.
‘West Side Story’, the Arthur Laurents classic which is a modern-day take on the Shakespearean standard ‘Romeo and Juliet’, continues to draw interest and enthusiasm from both fans and critics not only for its timelessness and timeliness, or its award winning repertoire, or its high flying dance routines which were considered to be fresh and raw at the time of its premiere, but because of what this production meant to musical theatre – a game changer, groundbreaking and transcending, a real treasure in a genre where every line, from start to finish, is breathed with a tune, which is exactly what makes ‘West Side Story’ excitingly relevant, emotionally charged and entertaining as always .
See what the five-decade buzz, rave and acclaim is all about. Come to the Covedale Center for the Performing Arts in Cincinnati through August 7, 2016 and experience for yourself the captivating power of ‘West Side Story’, directed by its very own librettist, Tony Award winner Arthur Laurents.
