Nicolas Dromard Takes Over for Gavin Lee in Broadway’s ‘Mary Poppins’
Nicolas Dromard will once again portray Bert in the Broadway production of Mary Poppins, replacing Gavin Lee in the role.
Dromard previously played the role for over two years as part of the North American touring version of the famous musical, and during that time he performed the part on Broadway for a time in summer 2010. He last played the role last year when the production was in Los Angeles at the Ahmanson Theatre.
Lee played his final performance January 4 and is leaving the production to join the West End production of “Top Hat.” Dromard will play the role starting January 9. In addition to “Mary Poppins,” the actor has been on Broadway previously as part of “Oklahoma!” and “The Boy From Oz.” His other professional theater credits include Fiyero in “Wicked,” Sketch in “Hairspray,” Tulsa in “Gypsy” and Pepper in “Mamma Mia!”
The current Broadway production is a joint effort between Disney and Cameron Mackintosh, and is based on the classic 1964 Walt Disney film staring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. The film won five Academy Awards.
The musical opened at the New Amsterdam Theatre on November 16, 2006 after previews began on October 14, 2006. The production features classic music from the film written by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman, as well as new songs written by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe. Julian Fellowes wrote the book and the production was directed by Richard Eyre. Both Fellowes and Eyre worked with Mackintosh to develop the stage production.
Nicolas Dromard will join the current cast of the play which includes Steffanie Leigh as the title character. Other actors currently in the production are Karl Kenzler as George Banks, Valerie Boyle as Mrs. Brill, Megan Osterhaus as Winifred Banks, Q. Smith as Miss Andrew and Jonathan Freeman as Admiral Bloom.
