‘Miss Saigon,’ ‘War Horse,’ ‘Mamma Mia’ Highlight 2013-14 Broadway Detroit
“Miss Saigon,” “War Horse” and “Mamma Mia!” highlight the upcoming 2013-2014 season of Broadway in Detroit.
All touring shows coming through the city will play at either the Fisher Theatre or the Detroit Opera House, and the season also includes “Elf: The Musical,” “Sister Act,” “We Will Rock You,” “The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber” and “The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess.”
“Miss Saigon” will kick off the season, playing in September and October. The musical re-imagines the opera “Madame Butterfly” set in the Vietnam War, and originally opened on Broadway in 1991.
Appropriately, “Elf: The Musical” will play in December for the holiday season. The musical is based on the 2003 movie starring Will Ferrell and Zooey Deschanel.
“War Horse” also will run in December, and Scott Myers, Directors of Corporate Sales and Marketing for Broadway in Detroit, told the Detroit News that the production will be great.
“It’s a huge production. It’s going to be a great theatrical event,” he said. “It’s going to be here for three weeks, and it’s here over the holidays.
Up next will be “The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber,” which celebrates the music of the legendary composer. The show features songs from “Evita,” “Cats,” “Jesus Christ Superstar,” “Sunset Boulevard” and more. The production will run in February 2014.
“We Will Rock You,” the show inspired by the music of Queen, comes to the Fisher in April 2014. The show has been a hit in London, and has been playing in the West End since opening in 2002. Since that time it has become a hit around the world through its touring companies. It features numerous Queen songs, including “We Are the Champions” and “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
Finally “Sister Act” will close out the season in April and May 2014. Based on the 1992 film starring Whoopi Goldberg, the musical first came to Broadway in 2011.
“Mamma Mia!” and “The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess” will be add-ons for the season subscription. The former will play in November, while the latter will play in March 2014.
