‘Matilda’ Launches National Tour in Los Angeles May 2015
Producers of the Tony Award winning musical Matilda the Musical announced that the production is set to launch a national tour in May 2015 at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles. The musical will play a technical preview at the Shubert Theatre in New Haven, CT prior to the tour’s official launch.
Other stops on the tour include Dallas’ AT&T Performing Arts Center, San Francisco’s SHN Orpheum Theatre, and Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre. Casting and additional stops will be announced at a later date.
Producers describe Matilda the Musical as, ” the story of an extraordinary little girl who decides that despite a bad beginning filled with rotten parents, a terrifying school and a vicious head mistress, her story is going to be an astonishing one. With the help of her teacher, her friends and a little bit of imagination, Matilda proves that even if you’re little, you can do big things.”
The production is directed and staged by Tony Award winner Matthew Warchus, with a book by Dennis Kelly and a score by Tim Minchin. Set and costume design is by Rob Howell, choreography by Peter Darling, orchestrations and musical supervision by Christopher Nightingale, lighting design by Hugh Vanstone, and sound design by Simon Baker.
Matilda originally premiered at The Royal Shakespeare Company’s Courtyard Theatre in November 2010. It late transferred to West End’s Cambridge Theatre where it still runs. Matilda also continues its run at the Shubert Theatre, where it opened on Broadway on April 11, 2013. Matilda has received four Tony Awards, including Best Book of a Musical, Best Featured Actor, Best Lighting Design and Best Scenic Design.
