‘Mamma Mia!’ Goes Crusin’ with Royal Caribbean
The hit musical Mamma Mia! is making its way to the high seas late next year. The musical will partner with Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Seas in November of 2014, based upon an announcement made by the cruise line.
The Royal Caribbean has been leading the trend of bringing big name Broadway shows to cruise liners. Since 2009, three Broadway musicals have debuted on the Royal Caribbean: Hairspray, Chicago, and Saturday Night Fever. The Quantum is currently in a shipyard in Germany undergoing construction so it will be ready to cater to its 4,180 passenger capacity as well as the cast of the hit musical production.
Mamma Mia! tells the story of a carefree mother whose less than spotless past catches up to her as her daughter’s upcoming wedding soon approaches. Since its inception, Mamma Mia! has been seen worldwide by more than 50 million people. Mamma Mia! recently reopened at its new Broadway home, the Broadhurst Theatre, and is now celebrating 13 years on Broadway; the tenth longest-running show in Broadway history with more than 4,000 performances which has made it one of Broadway’s top selling musical productions. The original West End production of the show is currently in its 13th year with more than 5,000 performances in London. Additionally, the international tour of the show has made stops in more than 50 cities and has been seen by nearly 4 million people worldwide. A film adaptation of the production which was produced by Judy Craymer and Gary Goetzman ranks as the most successful movie musicals of all time, grossing $600 million worldwide.
