Maggie Gyllenhaal Stars With Ewan McGregor in Broadway’s ‘The Real Thing’
Oscar nominee Maggie Gyllenhaal will make her Broadway debut opposite Ewan McGregor in Tom Stoppard’s The Real Thing. Performances of the Tony Award winning play will begin on October 2nd with an official opening date set for October 30th. The limited engagement is scheduled to run through January 4, 2015 at the American Airlines Theatre.
Despite this being her first Broadway role, Gyllenhaal is no newbie to the stage. Her stage credits include Anthony and Cleopatra, Closer, Homebody/Kabul, and Three Sisters. Gyllenhaal is also know for her screen work which includes Adaptation, Away We Go, Cecil B. Demented, Crazy Heart, Dark Knight, Donnie Darko, Happy Endings, Mona Lisa Smile, Nanny McPhee, Stranger Than Fiction, White House Down, and World Trade Center among several others. Gyllenhaal can soon be seen in the upcoming film Frank and The Honourable.
The Real Thing is directed by Sam Gold and tells the story of Henry, a successful playwright, who is unhappily married to Charlotte who is the lead actress in his current play about a marriage on the brink of collapse. As his affair with their friend Annie threatens to ruin his marriage, Henry notes that his personal life has begun to imitate art. Though Annie leaves her husband to begin life anew with Henry, he begins to doubt the nature of their love and wonders if it is real or simply fiction. It is a play that explores relationships, fidelity, and the blurred lines between love and lust.
