Fela! Chicago | Oriental Theatre
The Tony Award winning musical ‘Fela!’ comes to the Oriental Theatre in Chicago from March 28 to April 8, 2012. This highly infectious and vibrantly spirited musical based on the colorful story of Nigerian activist and Afrobeat originator Fela Anikulapo Kuti, is coming off the heels of its successful and highly raved London run at the National Theatre, with theatre critic Michael Billington of The Guardian praising it for pushing the theatrical envelope with its power to interact with its audiences through rhythmic and soulful music and dance, and the successful interplay of artistry, passion, nationalism and controversial political matters that plagued 1960s Nigeria to produce a relevant and substantial musical that is also highly entertaining.
“There should be dancing in the streets!,” writes New York Times critic Ben Brantley, and this musical is a testament to how Afrobeat, a musical genre and dance form conceptualized by the musical’s titular lead, can motivate a nation to fight government tyranny and oppression and strive for peace and change. His inspiring, tumultuous and triumphant journey to drive his nation away from hell and a bleak future became one of Broadway’s biggest hits in 2009. Winner of three Tony Awards including one for the show’s director and choreographer, Bill T. Jones, for his vivid choreography, ‘Fela!’ is a must-see musical that will inspire you to embrace life through dance and music amidst life’s struggles and the uncertainty of the future.
‘Fela!’ is produced by Grammy Award winning rapper and music producer Jay-Z and Hollywood power couple Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith.
