Wicked Philadelphia | Academy of Music

Wicked Philadelphia | Academy of Music

The Tony Award winning musical ‘Wicked’ returns to Philadelphia due to insistent public demand. It is slated to play the Academy of Music at the Kimmel Center for four weeks, from July 26 to August 27, 2017.

‘Wicked’ is “Broadway’s biggest blockbuster” (Newsweek) and is one of the decade’s most groundbreaking musicals, giving long-time theater fans a rare and distinct perspective on the life of the Wicked Witch of the West, Dorothy’s nemesis in Oz in the famed novel by L. Frank Baum. The Wicked Witch was known in her younger years as Elphaba, whose emerald skin and fiery and opinionated character made her a social pariah unlike her childhood friend, the lovable, popular and beautiful Galinda who eventually emerged as the Good Witch of the North. Both of these witches’ lives from their young years through adulthood is beautifully chronicled in this “most complete—and completely satisfying—new musical in a long time” (USA Today). The performance running time is 2 hours and 45 minutes with 1 intermission.

“It’s received wicked good reviews and has been declared “a cultural phenomenon” by Variety and “the best musical of the decade” by Entertainment Weekly. It’s also won a Grammy and a trio of Tony Awards.” – Deni Kasrel of uwishunu

“From my perspective, Wicked is a fantastic retelling of Baum’s classic story, and the touring show continues success that debuted in San Francisco and Broadway in 2003. There are one or two things that could use revision or removal (like the dragon), but they are minor in the grand scheme or things. Overall, this show adds a new layer to the world created by L. Frank Baum and, I believe, enhances it.” – Mike of ticketnetwork

“Welcome back Wicked, a gorgeous musical last in Philadelphia three years ago. The current production, part of the Broadway series at the Academy of Music, is full of great songs by Stephen Schwartz sung with full-throated passion by a uniformly fine cast.” – Toby Zinman of philly.com
