Wicked Austin | Bass Concert Hall

Wicked Austin | Bass Concert Hall

Coming to Austin early 2014 is “Broadway’s biggest blockbuster” (The New York Times), giving audiences a rich, colorful and in-depth perspective of what really went down in Munchkinland and the land of Oz before nosy Dorothy came in the picture, this is the Tony Award winning blockbuster musical, ‘Wicked’.

A tale of rivalries, love, acceptance, survival and triumph, ‘Wicked’ tells the story of the two witches of Oz, the emerald skinned Elphaba who became known as the Wicked Witch of the West, and the fair and beautiful Galinda, who eventually emerged as Glinda the Good Witch of the North. Their rivalry from their childhood days, back when Elphaba’s outspoken and feisty nature clashed with Galinda’s popularity, to realizing their magical but opposing destinies, results to “the most complete – and completely satisfying – new musical in a long time”, according to USA Today. And the fans definitely agree as ‘Wicked’ has broken box office records – wherever it went – over and over again, and it is expected to perform just as well, or even better, in Austin.

‘Wicked’ runs at the Bass Concert Hall at the Texas Performing Arts from February 19 to March 9, 2014. Show times are at 8 PM from Tuesdays to Saturdays, and at 7 PM on Sundays. Matinee performances are at 2 PM on Saturdays and 1 PM on Sundays. The performance running time is 2 hours and 45 minutes with 1 intermission.

“When I first saw this musical I understood it as Elphaba’s story. After all, she’s the title character, or almost, for she becomes the Wicked Witch. The show at Bass Hall suggests a more subtle interpretation. There’s wickedness aplenty to go around, and in the view of author Gregory Maguire and adapter Winnie Holzman, Elphaba is hardly wicked at all.” – Michael Meigs of Central Texas Live Theatre

“Wicked has returned to Bass Concert Hall as part of the Broadway in Austin series. This musical does for the Wicked Witch of the West what the most recent Star Wars movies did for Darth Vader: it asks whether people are born wicked or if they have wickedness “thrust upon them.” – Betties Box Office of Keye TV
