‘Soul Doctor’ Sets Broadway Closing for October 13

Producers of the Broadway musical Soul Doctor recently announced that the show will have its last performance October 13 at 3pm. The show’s close will mark only 32 previews and 66 regular performances that it has played following an Off-Broadway run last year.

Soul Doctor tells the story of Shlomo Carlebach (the father of popular Jewish music), and his unlikely friendship with Nina Simone. After Carlebach escapes from Nazi Germany, the young Rabbi befriends iconic jazz singer Simone who introduces him to a new world filled with soul and gospel music. It is this that inspires Carlebach to create a new sound with melodies which are infused with his roots in American popular music. The audience is able to trace Carlebach’s triumphs and tribulations as he struggles with his traditional beliefs and the “free love” generation of the 1960s, all the while  becoming a cultural phenomenon.

Eric Anderson and Amber Iman play the roles of Shlomo Carlebach and Nina Simone, respectively. The musical also features the talents of Jacqueline Antaramian, Dianna Barger, Richard Cerato, Tara Chambers, Maria Conti, Alexandra Frohlinger, Afra Hines, Abdur-Rahim Jackson, Jamie Jackson, Ethan Khusidman, Dillon Kondor, Zarah Mahler, Vasthy Mompoint, Ron Orbach, Ian Paget, Heather Parcells, Michael Paternostro, JC Schuster, Eric J. Stockton, Ryan Strand and Teddy Walsh.

The creative team for the show includes Daniel S. Wise with a book and direction, Shlomo Carlebach with music, David Schechter with lyrics, Benoit-Swan Pouffer with choreography, Neil Patel with scenic design, Maggie Morgan with costume design, Jeff Croiter with lighting design, Tony Award winner John Shivers and David Patridge with sound design, Steve Margoshes with orchestrations, Brian Koonin with music supervision and arrangements, and Seth Farber with music direction and arrangements. Production for the show is by Jeremy Chess, Jerome Levy, RoBert Beckwitt, Edward Steinberg, Joel Kahn and Danny Boy Productions.
