Kinky Boots New York | Al Hirschfeld Theatre
Cyndi Lauper’s Broadway baby, ‘Kinky Boots’ finally gets a grand Broadway kick-off this spring on April 4, 2013 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, with previews beginning March 5th.
Based on the 2005 eponymous film, this Harvey Fierstein Broadway adaptation features scores and songs from ‘80s pop icon Cyndi Lauper and direction and choreography from Tony winner Jerry Mitchell. It follows the odd but heartwarming friendship between Charlie Price (played by Tony nominee Stark Sands) and Simon (played by Billy Porter), a transvestite performer who goes by the moniker Lola when the lights are up. Their unlikely bond which was forged when Charlie took over his family’s ailing shoe factory just when Lola needed a pair of stilettos, paved the way for their own successes and a deep friendship despite lifelong disappointments and probably resentments from their own fathers, but even their old men would certainly be so proud of their sons to see how far they’ve come in their lives and how certain changes and life-altering decisions have made these two the best men that that they can be for themselves, for each other and for the people around them.
