‘Kinky Boots’ National Tour in the Works for 2014

Kinky Boots was the big winner at the Tony Awards over the weekend taking home six awards, and now producers have announced a national tour of the new musical that will kick off in 2014.

A representative told Playbill.com that the tour will begin in Las Vegas in 2014, though no official dates or venues have yet been named.

The production is based on the 2005 film of the same name, and features a score by songwriter Cyndi Lauper, best known for her songs “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” and “True Colors.” The book for the musical was written by Tony Award-winner Harvey Fierstein, best known for Torch Song, La Cage aux Folles and Newsies. Jerry Mitchell directs and choreographs the hit musical, and took home the Tony for best choreography. The production also won the for best musical, as well as best score for Lauper.

Previews for the musical began March 3 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, followed by an official opening on April 4. Here are the press notes on the musical:

In Kinky Boots, Charlie Price ([Stark] Sands) has suddenly inherited his father’s shoe factory, which is on the verge of bankruptcy. Trying to live up to his father’s legacy and save his family business, Charlie finds inspiration in the form of Lola ([Billy] Porter). A fabulous entertainer in need of some sturdy stilettos, Lola turns out to be the one person who can help Charlie become the man he’s meant to be. As they work to turn the factory around, this unlikely pair finds that they have more in common than they ever dreamed possible… and discovers that when you change your mind about someone, you can change your whole world.

The New York Times reports that the show received a sales bump following the Tonys, reporting its best single-day ticket sales the Monday following the ceremony.
