Disney’s ‘Newsies’ to Play Broadway’s Nederlander Theatre in March

A musical based on the film “Newsies” will start a limited run on Broadway’s Nederlander Theatre in March. The show will be a Disney Theatrical Production. The musical had a successful run at the Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, New Jersey.

The cast for the Broadway production has not yet been announced. However, the show will not star Jeremy Jordan who had starred in the show in New Jersey. Jordan is already on Broadway performing in “Bonnie and Clyde.”

The musical will be directed by award winning director Jeff Calhoun. He has been nominated for several Drama Desk and Tony Awards. He won a Tony Award for Excellence in Theatre for his work with “Big River.” His work on “Sleeping Beauty Wakes “won the Ovation Award for World Premiere Musical. He also won an Ovation Award for Best Director of a Musical for “Oliver!”

The Disney production is set for 101 shows. Which is a number Disney has had some success with before but this show does not involve Dalmatians. If the show is successful it is possible the run could be extended. Success is likely for “Newsies” with Disney backing and an award winning director. The cast will likely be star filled and the show was successful in its New Jersey debut.
