Debra Messing Said to be Dating ‘Smash’ CoStar Will Chase

After announcing to Us Weekly on December 20 that she split from Daniel Zelman – her husband of ten years – earlier this year, it appears Debra Messing is now romantically involved with her “Smash” costar Will Chase.

Us Weekly quotes an “insider” as saying that “Debra and Will have been together for about six weeks. She is completely smitten with him.” The same source says, “Will didn’t break up Debra and Daniel. It was over before she met Will.” Messing and Zelman reportedly will share custody of their 7-year-old son, Roman. Additionally, it is reported that Chase also has left his wife, stage actress Stephanie Gibson, whom he has been married to for two years. Chase has two children from a previous marriage.

“Smash” is an upcoming musical series set to air on NBC starting on February 6. The show is based around a group of characters attempting to put together a Broadway musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe. Messing plays Julia Houston, and songwriter and lyricist who also co-wrote the Broadway musical the group is attempting to perform. Chase plays Stephen, a man Julia had been romantically linked to in the past.

The show began as an idea by Steven Spielberg, and was originally developed as a Showtime network project. Robert Greenblatt, formerly entertainment president of Showtime, later brought the project to NBC, and a pilot was filmed in March 2011 with Spielberg acting as executive producer. NBC picked up the series that May and opted to give it a mid-season debut in order to pair it with the reality show “The Voice.” The second season of “The Voice” will debut the day before the premiere of “Smash” directly following the network’s coverage of Super Bowl XLVI.

NBC struck a deal with Columbia Records earlier this year to produce the soundtrack for the series, which will include cover songs as well as original songs from the series written by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.
