‘Book of Mormon,’ ‘Evita,’ ‘Once’ Part of Tampa’s Straz Center 2013-14 Broadway Season

“The Book of Mormon” and “Once” are among the eight productions that make up the 2013-2014 season Straz Center in Tampa.

Other than these two shows, the season also will include “The Gershwins’ ‘Porgy and Bess,’” “Evita,” “Ghost The Musical” and “We Will Rock You.” Two additional productions will be announced at a later time.

“With all of the great Broadway seasons we’ve had over the years, this could be the best one yet,” said Judith Lisi, president and CEO of the Straz Center in a statement. “Our 2013-14 Broadway season has the two most recent Tony Award-winning Best Musicals, the current Tony Award-winning Best Revival of a Musical and so much more. Tampa Bay audiences will be treated to a season that is both compelling and entertaining and spotlights the very best of musical theater.”

“The Book of Mormon” will kick off the season November 12-24, and is one of the two most recent Best Musical Tony Award-winners Lisi mentioned in her statement. In fact, the production won a total of nine Tony Awards at the 2011 ceremony.

“The Gershwins’ ‘Porgy and Bess’” is the Best Revival winner Lisi spoke of, and will run in Tampa January 14-19, 2014. “Once” will follow this production with a one-week engagement February 11-16, 2014.

“Evita” will come to Tampa March 18-23, 2014. The Broadway revival of the Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber musical starring Ricky Martin recently announced it would end its New York run later this month.

“Ghost The Musical” will play April 22-27, 2014, and of course is based on the 1990 movie “Ghost” starring Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore. “We Will Rock You” rounds out the currently announced productions, and will play May 13-18, 2014. This show features the music of Queen and is set 300 years in the future.
