Scarlett Johansson Looks to Make Broadway Return in ‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof’

This Friday, moviegoers can see Scarlett Johansson star in “The Avengers,” which promises to be the first big blockbuster of this coming summer movie season – but it looks like the star may have something less massive planned for the near future by making her return to Broadway.

Rumors that Johansson would appear in an upcoming Broadway revival of Tennessee Williams’ “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” appear to be closer to fruition now, as the actress recently told Variety.

“I’m close to make a deal on it,” she said in an interview the magazine. “I cannot wait absolutely to get to it. I’m exhilarated, I’m terrified, but I think in a good way.”

Scarlett Johansson made her stage debut in the 2010 revival of Arthur Miller’s “A View From the Bridge.” That production ran for a limited 14-week engagement and won a Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play.

Johansson reportedly would play Maggie, and other reports have her “Avengers” co-star Jeremy Renner playing her husband Brick in the play. The news was originally reported in April by the Hollywood Reporter, which stated that “[Renner] may do a run on Broadway of ‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof’ with his ‘Avengers’ co-star Johansson, but only if Ridley Scott doesn’t hire him for his upcoming ‘The Counselor.’”

No official dates have yet been announced concerning the revival of the play, which was written in 1955.

In other Johansson news, she was honored earlier this week with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. When asked in the same Variety interview about being a workaholic, the actress explains her busy schedule.

“I’m probably like most actors: when you’re not working, all you can do is think about work and complain and agonize,” she said. “Then you get a job and it’s ‘I can’t go back to work. I just can’t do it. I’m going to fail. It’s a disaster, I’m a fraud, they’re going to find me out.”
