Emma Stone Looking at Broadway Debut in ‘Cabaret’ Revival for 2014

Emma Stone is in talks to make her Broadway debut in an upcoming revival of “Cabaret.”

The Wrap reports that an unnamed source said Stone is in talks to play Sally Bowles in the musical. Bowles previously has been played by many notable names including Liza Minnelli, Judi Dench and Natasha Richardson.

The new revival of the musical was reported last week by the New York Times, and will be staged at Studio 54 in early 2014 by the Roundabout Theater Company. Alan Cummings will reprise his role as the M.C. – he won a Tony Award for the same performance in 1998 during a Roundabout revival that also ran at Studio 54.

Roundabout has yet to officially confirm the revival – a spokesman declined to comment to the Times.

It was initially reported that Anne Hathaway would take on the role of Bowles, but that was denied by her publicist, who called the original Daily Mail report “completely false.”

“Cabaret” is based on the play “I Am a Camera” by John Van Druten, as well as stories of Christopher Isherwood. The musical features a book by Joe Masteroff and a score by John Kander and Fred Ebb. That score features well-known hits such as the title song, “Willkommen,” “Don’t Tell Mama” and “So What.”

The musical originally premiered on Broadway in 1966 and was directed by Harold Prince. That production ran for more than 1,100 performances. The 1998 revival featuring Cummings began previews in March 1998 and ran for 2,414 performances. The late Natasha Richards starred as Bowles in that production.

A film adaptation of “Cabaret” premiered in 1972 and starred Liza Minelli, Michael York and Joel Grey. The film was somewhat altered from the original stage version. It was nominated for ten Academy Awards in 1973, winning eight, including Best Actress for Minnelli and Best Director for Bob Fosse.
