Camp Broadway Brings Broadway to Kids Through Camp Tour
The traveling version of Camp Broadway is back for its 13 year this summer, and will visit cities across the U.S. The long-running New York City version of the camp also will be held in three sessions this summer.
The theater camp is designed to give kids aged 10-17 a true Broadway experience, offering classes from Broadway professionals designed to give kids the real experience of the Great White Way. A press release says the camps’ “immersive program gives campers a non-competitive, ensemble-based experience that boosts theatrical skills and self-esteem.”
The tour will kick off July 8-12 at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, and will run through a session August 5-9 at the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center in Westhampton Beach, N.Y. Other cities on the tour are Buffalo, N.Y.; Gainesville, Fla.; Greenville, S.C.; Jacksonville, Fla.; LasVegas; Pittsburgh; Providence, R.I. and Tempe, Ariz.
The original New York City version of the camp also will be held in three sessions: July 15-19; August 5-9 and August 12-16.
“It’s truly special to introduce young people to the world of Broadway by engaging them in a real show experience with Broadway professionals,” said Staci Koonce , Vice President of Education for The Peace Center for the Performing Arts in Greenville, S.C., in a statement. “Campers aren’t just experiencing master classes and performances, but they’re also gaining confidence to try new things, explore new art forms, and really build a lasting relationship with musical theater.”
The official website of the Camp Broadway program says that more than 20,000 children from around the world have attended the events since 1995, and that other programs offered by the group have allowed more than 300,000 students to attend a Broadway show.
A press release advices those that want to attend to sign up as soon as possible, as space is limited in all of the Camp Broadway workshops.
