‘Mean Girls’ The Musical? Tina Fey Says Its Almost a Reality
Tina Fey revealed that she is working on a new musical adaptation of her film “Mean Girls.”
“Maybe! We want to. I would love to,” Fey replied when asked if the musical version of the movie will happen. “I’m trying to develop it with my husband, who does all the music for “30 Rock,” and I think Paramount’s onboard.”
She also said that there have been no official meetings with Paramount just yet.
“We’ve had the opportunity to meet with producers on it, but we never have,” she continued. “[“Mean Girls”] actually belongs to Paramount so we don’t really own it, but whatever happens we’d like to be involved.”
According to the “30 Rock” star, the movie should translate to the stage.
“I thought the movie in some ways mostly appealed to young girls and gay men, and I feel like that could be a recipe for success on Broadway,” she said.
Additionally, Fey commented on the recent fight over “Mean Girls” between Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj on “American Idol,” and said that Mariah might have won a spot in the musical.
“I love it!” she said, referring to the spat. “And I think Mariah won. Like, Mariah seemed to really know the characters… Maybe she can play Amy Poehler’s part in the musical.”
Carey has expressed her admiration for the movie at different times during the past few years, and allegedly used a quote from the film as an intro to her single “Obsessed” from her most recent album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel.
The 2004 film version of “Mean Girls” starred Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Lacey Chabert, Amanda Seyfried and Lizzy Caplan. In addition to Fey and Poehler, the film also featured other “SNL” stars Tim Meadows and Ana Gasteyer.
Fey made the remarks just before winning a Screen Actors Guild Award for “30 Rock.”
