‘We Will Rock You’ Set for US & World Tour, Broadway Possible
It looks like we can expect a U.S. tour of “We Will Rock You” sometime soon, as well as a possible Broadway engagement.
Queen guitarist Brian May took to his website, Brian’s Soapbox, to talk about upcoming events for the musical based on the music of Queen.
“[Queen drummer] Roger [Taylor] and I meet often to keep in touch with all the various Queen projects that are in progress – and there are lots!… We are also finally pressing the button on that USA WWRY tour! Amazing. It will sit down in NYC for a while too!”
Late last year, a European Arena tour for the musical was announced that will kick off in Finland late next month, and the tour is scheduled to run at least through a Belfast, Ireland engagement June 12-15. The tour will then be expanded into a world tour when additional dates for Japan, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa are announced shortly. It appears we may be able to add North America to that list, though no official statements about the possibility have yet been released.
The West End version the show is currently in its 11th year at the Dominion Theatre. It is the longest running show at the Dominion and the ninth longest running show in West End history. Producers report that more than 13 million tickets have been sold for the production around the world.
“Everywhere, the kids watch the same movies, wear the same fashions and think the same thoughts,” says the official website about the story of the musical. “It’s a safe, happy, Ga Ga world. Unless you’re a rebel. Unless you want to Rock.” But despite the presence of so many “Boy Bands and of Girl Bands… Legend persists that somewhere on Planet Mall instruments still exist. Somewhere, the mighty axe of a great and hairy guitar god lies buried deep in rock… Where is the place of living rock?”
