Jekyll & Hyde Moves Broadway Opening to Marquis Theatre April 18
The upcoming Broadway revival of “Jekyll & Hyde” will play at the Marquis Theatre, rather than the previously announced Richard Rodgers Theatre. Previews will begin April 5, with the official opening of the limited, 13-week engagement coming April 18. The production is scheduled to close June 30.
The Broadway production follows the conclusion of the current national tour of the famous musical. No reason for the theater change has yet been given. The Richard Rodgers Theatre currently is home to the revival of “Cat On a Hot Tin Roof” starring Scarlett Johansson and the Marquis Theatre will become empty after its current production, “Evita,” closes on January 26.
The revival of “Jekyll and Hyde” stars Tony Award-nominee and former “American Idol” finalist Constantine Maroulis in the title roles. The production also stars Grammy-nominated R&B singer Deborah Cox as Lucy, Laird Mackintosh as John Utterson, Teal Wicks as Emma Carew and Richard White as Sir Danvers Carew.
The 25-city national tour is currently in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center, where it will remain through January 27. Before coming to Broadway, the production also will stage productions in Los Angeles, Des Moines and West Palm Beach, Florida.
The original Broadway production of the musical opened at the Plymouth Theatre in 1997 and closed in 2001 after 1,543 performances.
Maroulis was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Actor in 2009 for his performance as Drew in “Rock of Ages.” He also appeared on Broadway in “The Wedding Singer” and has appeared Off-Broadway in “Jacques Brel…” He was part of the national tour of “Rent.”
In other news, a new production company, RP Media, recently purchased the film rights to “Jekyll & Hyde,” and producers hope to find a director soon and have the musical on the big screen within two years.
