Nirvana the Musical? Courtney Love Pitches Broadway Grunge

A musical about Nirvana and its frontman Kurt Cobain may be coming to Broadway.

The news comes from a somewhat strange place: a courtroom. SPIN reports that music manager Sam Lufti revealed that he was working on a musical with Courtney Love while speaking in court. He currently is suing Britney Spears’ family for libel and other claims.

Lufti said that he and Love “are currently working on a possible motion picture or Broadway musical based on the Nirvana catalogue, based on her life and Kurt Cobain’s.” He also described Love as “an accomplished actress” and said that he “currently co-manage[s] Ms. Love.”

After his testimony, Lufti remarked to the New York Daily News that “It’s an idea,” but declined to say any more about the musical. The News also quotes an anonymous source as saying that Love has previously discussed “doing a movie or play about her life with Kurt [Cobain]… it’s been her dream to get her side of the story out.”

In other Nirvana related news, CBS is developing a new sitcom with the working title “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” though the show doesn’t seem to have much else to do with the grunge band.

“The multicamera comedy revolves around an 18-year-old budding entrepreneur who forgoes Harvard and instead opts to launch a multibillion-dollar internet company from his garage with the assistance of his sister, best friend and his 1990s indie-rock parents,” according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Dave Goetsch is developing the show, and is best known as a writer on the hit CBS show “Big Bang Theory.”

No word yet on whether Love or either of the two surviving members of Nirvana (Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic) will condone the use of the title should it move through to production. If precedent is any indication, there will likely be a few legal battles forthcoming between all legal parties if CBS uses the title.
