‘Mary Poppins’ Books Dates in New Zealand, Mexico City

For the first time ever, the musical version of “Mary Poppins” will appear in New Zealand and Mexico City later this year.

The first New Zealand production will begin October 18 at The Civic in Auckland. The New Zealand stint will be a continuation of the acclaimed Australian production of the musical, which opened in Melbourne on July 2010 and achieved 100 percent of gross box office in its record breaking run. A sell-out 97-week Australian national tour of the production played to 1.35 million people, traveling to Perth and Brisbane, among other Aussie cities.

The Mexico City engagement will begin November 14 at the Centro Cultural Telmex. The production is not only the first presentation of the musical in Mexico City, it also marks the first Spanish-language production of the Mary Poppins musical ever.

The Broadway production of “Mary Poppins” opened in November 2006 and recently became the 24th longest running show in Broadway history. The production is presented by Disney and Cameron Mackintosh.

The original “Mary Poppins’ musical opened in London’s West End at the Prince Edward Theatre in December 2004. It enjoyed a three-year run before embarking on a U.K. tour.

BroadwayWorld.com reports that talks are underway for a French language production of the musical in Paris next fall, though no official announcements have yet been made. Currently, productions of the musical are underway in Budapest, Hungary as well as Estonia. A Czech Republic production is set to open next month.

Next year, a U.S. tour will kick off at the Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire, Illinois, and productions will also take place at the Tuachan Theatre in Ivins, Utah, the Musical Theatre of Wichita and the Maine State Music Theatre in Brunsick, Maine. More U.S. dates for next year are expected to be announced soon.
