Estelle Parsons, Stephen Spinella Star in Broadway’s ‘The Velocity of Autumn’ Spring 2013

Estelle Parsons and Stephen Spinella are heading to Broadway next year as the stars of Eric Coble’s new two-character play, “The Velocity of Autumn.”

The 90-minute dramatic comedy will mark Coble’s Broadway debut and is set to open in spring 2013. The theater and dates will be announced at a later date, though the Washington Post reports this could be an issue.

“The deal is not a sure thing, however,” the newspaper noted. “‘The Velocity of Autumn’ still must find an available Broadway house, and the financing of the multimillion dollar venture is not yet in place – two of the guarantors of an opening night. [Larry] Kaye, a Bethesda-based producer who has invested in other Broadway shows, such as ‘American Idiot’ and the revival of ‘How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,’ says he is at the beginning of the process of finding others who will put money into the venture.”

But the paper notes that signs look promising for the play, which would be the Broadway director of Molly Smith, artistic director at Arena Stage in Washington, D.C.

Producers say “The Velocity of Autumn “swirls around 80-year-old Alexandra, an artist facing the indignities of old age and her family’s insistence on moving to a nursing home. With nothing to lose, Alexandra has locked herself in her Brooklyn brownstone with a pile of Molotov cocktails and is now in a standoff with her children and the police. When Alexandra is visited by her youngest son Chris – who has climbed into her second floor window ending a 20-year absence from her life – in the blink of an eye the emotional bombs start detonating.”

Estelle Parsons won an Academy Award for her portrayal of Blanche Barrow in the 1967 film, “Bonnie and Clyde,” and also played Roseanne’s mother on “Roseanne” for many years.
