Tom Cavanagh, Judd Hirsch Enact ‘Freud’s Last Session’ in Los Angeles

Judd Hirsch and Tom Cavanagh will star in the two-character play “Freud’s Last Section” next year in Los Angeles.

The play, by Mark St. Germain, imagines a meeting between Sigmund Freud and C.S. Lewis. Tyler Marchant will direct the play, which is set to run January 11 through February 10, 2013 at The Broad Stage in Santa Monica.

“Freud’s Last Session” centers on legendary psychoanalyst Dr. Sigmund Freud, who invites the young, rising academic star C.S. Lewis to his home in London. Lewis, expecting to be called on the carpet for satirizing Freud in a recent book, soon realizes Freud has a much more significant agenda. On the day England enters World War II, Freud and Lewis clash on the existence of God, love, sex, and the meaning of life – only two weeks before Freud chooses to take his own. Not just a powerful debate, this is a profound and deeply touching play about two men who boldly addressed the greatest questions of all time.

The play premiered in 2010 and has been staged in theaters around the world since that time. This Los Angeles version was first announced in April.

Hirsch is a two-time Tony Award winner, including winning the honor for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play for his role in “Conversation’s With My Father.” He is also known from his television work in “Taxi,” “Dear John” and “Numb3rs,” among others.

Cavanagh is perhaps best known for his role as the title character in the NBC show, “Ed.” He also has appeared in numerous television shows and movies, and co-hosts the podcast “Mike and Tom Eat Snacks” with Michael Ian Black.

The idea for the play originated in Dr. Armand M. Nicholi, Jr.’s book “The Question of God.” It was presented Off-Broadway by Carolyn Rossi Copeland, Robert Stillman and Jack Thomas.
