White Plains Performing Arts Center Features Hair, Tommy for 2012-13 Season
“Hair” and “Tommy” will be among the production featured during the 2012-2013 season at the White Plains Performing Arts Center (WPPAC).
The upcoming season will mark the 10th anniversary for the venue in the New York City suburb. The season will feature three mainstage Equity productions along with a new series of musicals known as the “Spotlight” series.
The season will kick off October 5 with a production of the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning drama, “August: Osage County.” The dark comedy is written by Tracy Letts and is directed by the WPPAC artistic director, Jeremy Quinn. The play will run through October 14.
The Pulitzer Prize-winning musical “The Color Purple” will then make its New York regional debut with a run February 1 through February 24, 2013. This will be followed by the Oscar Wilde classic “The Importance of Being Earnest,” which can be seen April 5-14.
But the new “Spotlight” series will kick off at the end of this year, and the two semi-staged productions will feature a full orchestration on stage. The first will be “The Who’s Tommy,” which will be directed by Greg Baccarini and play December 7 and December 8, and then “Hair” will run from May 3 through May 12, 2013.
The WWPAC is a not-for-profit organization in downtown White Plains, N.Y., and describes itself as “dedicated to the presentation and production of a full spectrum of performing arts events for the City of White Plains and its surrounding communities.”
In other news about “August: Osage County,” the play is being adapted for the big screen and will star Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts, and will be produced and distributed by the Weinstein Company. Television veteran John Wells is set to direct, though no official premiere date has yet been confirmed.
