‘Cinderella’ Opens at Broadway Theatre February 21

The classic Rodgers & Hammerstein musical “Cinderella” will make its Broadway debut in 2013 at the Broadway Theatre. Opening night will be February 21.

Producers announced recently that the musical, which was originally written for television, would come to Broadway for the first time ever. The production will be directed by Mark Brokaw, who is known for his previous work on “The Lyons” and “Cry-Baby.”

The title character will be played by Laura Osnes, a Tony Award nominee known for her work in “Bonnie & Clyde” and “South Pacific.” Santino Fontana will play the Prince, and he is remembered for his roles in “Billy Elliot” and “The Importance of Being Earnest.” Tony Award winner Harriet Harris will appear as Cinderella’s stepmother and Victoria Clark will play the role of the Fairy Godmother. Other cast members include Peter Bartlett, Ann Harada, Maria Mindelle and Greg Hildreth.

The production is produced by Robyn Goodman, who was responsible for “Avenue Q” and the 2008 revival of “West Side Story.” Other producers are Stephen Kocis and Jill Furman in association with Center Theatre Group.

The new production will be a new incarnation of the original television version, with a new book by Douglas Carter Beane. Though the show will be different, it does retain songs form the original version, including “In My Own Little Corner,” “Ten Minutes Ago,” “Impossible/It’s Possible,” and “Do I Love You Because You’re Beautiful?”

Though the play has never been performed on Broadway up until this point, it did stop by Madison Square Garden in 2001 as part of a national tour. That tour starred Jamie-Lynn Sigler and Eartha Kitt.

The original television performance of “Cinderella” premiered in 1957 and starred Oscar winner Julie Andrews. The show has been produced for television two more times throughout the years, with the most recent coming in 1997 and starring pop singers Brandy and Whitney Houston.
