Lewis Black Takes ‘Running on Empty’ to Broadway in October

Comedian and actor Lewis Black will bring his latest show, “Running on Empty” for a week-long run on Broadway later this year. Coming as no surprise to anyone familiar with Black’s work, the show will feature politically charged material.

“Smack in the middle of another election year, so what better time?” Black asks in a statement on his website announcing the show, and goes on to explain why he’s bringing the show to Broadway.

“Why Broadway?” he said, “It’s close to my apartment, just blocks away, and frankly I’m too tired to go anywhere else. These guys are exhausting me. Democrats. Republicans. The Tea Party. Just shut up. Enough is enough.”

The show will be performed at the Richard Rodgers Theatre October 9-14. That theater is currently hosting a revival of “Porgy and Bess,” which is scheduled to run through September 23.

Earlier this year, Black also got into politics concerning the upcoming presidential election with a project called “Dog on the Roof: On the Road with Mitt Romney and Mutt.” The project references the now infamous anecdote that the Romney family one time went on vacation with their dog Seamus strapped to the top of the car. Black voices Seamus in the project.

Black also appeared on Broadway for his 2004 show, “Black on Broadway,” which was filmed and later televised on HBO. He is perhaps best know for his association with Comedy Central, and his appearance on the network’s “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” as well as “Lewis Black’s Root of All Evil.”

Black received a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album in 2007 for his album, The Carnegie Hall Performance. He has also appeared in numerous television and film roles, including spots on “Law & Order,” “Mad About You,” “Man of the Year” and “The Big Bang Theory.”
