Wicked New York | Gershwin Theatre
We all know the story of Dorothy’s adventures in the magical land of Oz and her famous rivalry with the Wicked Witch, but no one knew of the life of the said villainess until Gregory Maguire’s 1995 parallel novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. The title says it all and the novel served as a solid and beautiful foundation for a Broadway musical that would go on to be the toast of theatrical circles and the winner of three Tony Awards in 2004.
“Wicked”, the musical adaptation penned for the stage by Winnie Holzman and scored by critically acclaimed composer Stephen Schwartz with direction from Joe Mantello, has bewitched Broadway audiences for years since it premiered at the Gershwin Theatre in 2003. It tells the story of Elphaba, a girl from Oz cursed with an emerald skin but gifted with a beautiful mind and a strong character, who would eventually rise as the Wicked Witch. Galinda, a blonde and popular girl who would rise as the Good Witch, was Elphaba’s early rival and contemporary. Fans have always been entertained with the musical’s perfect blend of fantasy, amazing music and choreography, colorful sets and costumes, interesting characters and a bit of whim, making it “The Best Musical of the Decade” (Entertainment Weekly).
