Billy Crystal’s ‘700 Sundays’ Comes to HBO April 19
After a live taping January 3rd and 4th at the Imperial Theatre in New York, HBO has confirmed that Billy Crystal’s 700 Sundays will debut on the network Saturday, April 19, 2013 between 9-11 pm ET/PT. This comes after a highly successful Broadway run and tour throughout the U.S.
700 Sundays is described as “an original two-act play in which Crystal plays numerous characters who have influenced who he is today, dealing with his youth, growing up in the jazz world of Manhattan, his teenage years and, finally, adulthood.”
When the production debuted on Broadway it broke the house record for the highest weekly gross at the Broadhurst Theatre and continued to top its own record each subsequent week. The show was one of the top ten grossing shows each week it played despite only six performances each week. This earned Crystal the title “The King of Broadway” by The New York Post. To date the show has grossed over $21 million in sales.
After Broadway, the show sold-out limited engagement performances in cities such as Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Toronto. The show then moved to Melbourne and Sydney, Australia where it sold out there too for both engagements. Afterwards, the show returned to the U.S. with engagements in Atlanta, Boston, Miami, Palm Beach, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC.
700 Sundays has won the 2005 Tony Award for Special Theatrical Experience, the 2005 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Solo Performance, the 2005 Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Solo Performance, and the 2007 Helpmann Award for Best Special Event.
