‘Newsies,’ ‘Wicked,’ ‘Pippin’ Are Coming to Atlanta During 2014-15 Season

Fans of Broadway musicals will now be able to enjoy hits such as Newsies, Wicked, and Pippin as part of the 2014-15 Fifth Third Bank Broadway in Atlanta lineup. There will be a total of nine shows (three more than the current season) which will launch with Disney’s The Little Mermaid at The Fox Theatre in July.

Vice President of Broadway in Atlanta Russ Belin said in a statement, “We’ve  done a great job to represent New York and Broadway. Motown is a real crowd-pleaser and will be a blast; Pippin is a real spectacle. Those performers not only sing and act but do these circus tricks; and Newsies is very family-friendly with a great score. Those three shows are still on Broadway, which I feel is special about this season.”

The line-up for the 2014-15 Fifth Third Bank Broadway in Atlanta is as follows:

> Disney’s The Little Mermaid – July 8-13, 2014
> The Phantom of the Opera – October 22-Nov. 2, 2014
> Dirty Dancing – November 25-30, 2014
> Disney’s Newsies – January 20-25, 2015
> Blue Man Group – April 7-12, 2015
> Pippin – May 5-10, 2015
> Motown the Musical – August 18-23, 2015
> Mamma Mia! – September 23-28, 2014
> Wicked – February 18-March 8, 2015.

Belin did reference the loss of the Theater of the Stars which filed for bankruptcy after 61 years in existence. To account for its closing, additional opening dates were provided at the Fox Theatre. Belin shared, “The opportunity is for us to be part of Atlanta and fill that Broadway  touring need. As our shows play the Fox, it’s important to support the  venue and help with the programming. As we are part of this bigger network of shows, we were able to program a slightly expanded season.”

Given the success of the current season, greater things can only be expected for the future. “We’re in the middle of our most successful season in our 33-year history,” Belin said. “The goal is to stick to a bigger season [but] it all comes down to, are the titles available? And that comes down to what people are supporting in New York.”
