‘Romeo & Juliet’ Close Broadway Run December 8
The Broadway revival of Romeo and Juliet which stars Orlando Bloom and Tony Award nominee Condola Rashad in the leading roles, respectively, is set to close December 8, 2013 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. The production, which will have played 27 previews and 93 regular performances upon closing, marks the first time in 36 years that the play has been produced for Broadway.
Bloom, perhaps best known for his roles in the Academy Award winning film trilogy The Lord of the Rings and The Pirates of the Caribbean film series, has successfully made a name for himself as a leading man in Hollywood. Other notable films Bloom has appeared or starred in include Elizabethtown, Kingdom of Heaven, Black Hawk Down, The Good Doctor, and Haven among several others. He made his stage debut in the West End production of In Celebration at the Duke of York’s Theatre in 2007. He returned to the stage in 2011 to stage a collection of Shakespearean texts for conductor Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
Rashad earned Tony nominations in 2012 and 2013 for her performances in Stick Fly and The Trip to Bountiful. Her performance in the Pulitzer Prize winning play Ruined won her a Theatre World Award as well as a Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Award nomination. Other theatre credits include Tambourines To Glory and Pearl. Film and television credits include 30 Beats, Sex and the City 2, Smash, Georgetown, The Good Wife, and the Lifetime production of Steel Magnolias where she starred alongside Queen Latifah, Alfre Woodard, and her mother Phylicia Rashad.
Additional members of the cast include Tony Award nominee Jayne Houdyshell (Nurse), Tony Award winner Brent Carver (Friar Laurence), Tony Award winner Chuck Cooper (Lord Capulet), Christian Camargo (Mercutio), Justin Guarini (Paris), Rosyln Ruff (Lady Capulet), Conrad Kemp (Benvolio), Corey Hawkins (Tybalt), and Geoffrey Owens (Prince Escalus).
Five-time Tony Award nominee David Leveaux directs the production which officially opened September 19, 2013. Additional members of the creative team include Jesse Poleshuck with scenic design, Fabio Toblini with costume design, David Weiner with lighting design, David Van Tieghem with sound design, and David Brian Brown with hair design.
