Hugh Jackman Considering ‘Drowsy Chaperone’ Film Role

Hugh Jackman shared in an interview posted on Yahoo Movies that he has been offered the role of Aldolpho in a big screen adaptation of the Broadway Musical Drowsy Chaperone.

When the film was brought up during the conversation Jackman said, “What a coincidence! The script just hit my desk, with Geoffrey Rush attached to it.” He neither confirmed nor denied his participation in the project however.

In a report given by CBS News it has been confirmed that Geoffrey Rush will be involved in the film project. Co-writer of the book Don McKellar shared in a statement, “We saw [Rush in Drowsy] and he was excellent – and also he’s an excellent person. We’re pretty excited about being involved with him. . .He is incredibly Man in Chair-like. When he was a little boy, instead of playing with trucks, he was making model theatres out of shoeboxes.” Rush has won an Academy Award for his performance in Shine and received an Oscar nomination for his roles in Shakespeare in Love, Quills, and The King’s Speech.

Jackman has been most recently seen in the film Prisoners alongside actor Jake Gyllenhaal. He has also starred in The Wolverine and the Oscar-nominated film adaptation of Les Miserables. Additional projects featuring the actor include the upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past and The Greatest Showman on Earth. Jackman’s Broadway credits include Hugh Jackman…One Night Only, Back on Broadway, A Steady Rain, and The Boy From Oz for which he won a 2004 Tony Award. His latest musical entitled Houdini is set to hit Broadway within the next year to 18 months according to a report by the Daily Mail.

The Drowsy Chaperone is a five time Tony Award winning musical comedy.  It features music and lyrics by Lisa Lambert and Gregg Morrison and a Tony Award winning book by Bob Martin and Don McKellar. The production closed December 30, 2007 at the Marquis Theatre after 674 performances and 32 previews.
