‘The Winslow Boy’ Revival Hits Broadway’s American Airlines Theatre October 17
Broadway’s American Airlines Theatre will be welcoming the Roundabout Theatre Company’s revival of Terence Rattigan’s classic play The Winslow Boy on October 17, 2013 with an expected run date through December 1. Previews for the show began September 20.
Tony Award winner Roger Rees, Tony Award nominee Michael Cumpsty, Academy Award nominee Mary Eliabeth Mastrantonio, and Alessandro Nivola will lead the cast of the production. Rees will star as Arthur Winslow opposite Mastrantonio who will play Grace Winslow. Cumpsty will play Desmond Curry and Nivola will play Sir Robert Morton. The cast also features Zachary Booth as Dickie Winslow, Spencer Davis Milford as Ronnie Winslow, Chandler Williams as John Watherstone, Meredith Forlenza as Miss Barnes, Stephen Pilkington as Fred, and Henny Russel as Violet.
The Winslow Boy has been described by the Roundabout Theatre as, “A moving exploration of family devotion, [that] beautifully illustrates the costs of unconditional love and the rewards that make the effort priceless.” It tells the story of Ronnie Winslow who is expelled from school for stealing, which greatly affects the entire family. His father Arthur is then tasked with the role of pooling his resources to hire a lawyer for the boy’s defense. His brother Dickie begrudgingly drops out of college and gets a banking job to help with the legal costs. And the fallout from this unexpected predicament puts his sister Catherine’s engagement in jeopardy. Though they are determined to defend Ronnie, the family’s sacrifices may not be enough to clear his reputation and the Winslow name.
The production is directed by Olivier Award winner Lindsay Posner who recently staged the play at London’s Old Vic, where it received rave reviews. The show’s creative team includes Peter McKintosh with set and costume design, David Lander with lighting design, and Drew Levy with sound design.
