Richard Klein to Star as Liberace in Broadway’s ‘All That Glitters’

Following a successful New York Workshop production, Alexander DeJong will bring the Liberace musical All That Glitters “the unauthorized biography of a ground-breaking legend” to Broadway for the 2014-15 season. Richard Klein is set to star in the production as one of three men who will play the iconic Liberace.

Kline will document the portion of Liberace’s life whereby he is “the emotionally wrecked superstar who reinvented television, kidnapped Las Vegas and unapologetically cleaned up financially in Europe.” Announcements have yet to be made regarding who will play Liberace “as a child prodigy in Milwaukee and as the neutron explosion that was Lee’s ascension to stardom.”

The production is directed and choreographed by Alexander DeJong and it is produced by AX Productions, Inc. The show’s general management comes from Town Square Productions’ Don Frantz and Laurie Brown. Additional creative contributions include a book by DeJong and James A. Walsh, music and lyrics by DeJong with additional music by Tom Nelson, costumes by Bob Mackie, scenery by John Arnone, lighting by Howell Binkley, and musical and vocal supervision by Jack Lee.

A subsidiary of Gibson Guitar Corporation and the original sponsor of Liberace, Baldwin Pianos will supply various pianos for the Broadway show. One such piano will be the last one ever played by Liberace, the Swarovski rhinestone-encrusted piano that was on stage at the legendary and record-breaking 1986 run at Radio City Music Hall. Reports are that two global jewelry companies have been approached by DeJong in order to meet the challenge of obtaining the bling needed to match Liberace’s grand splendor and taste for fine things.

Show producers are currently working towards a 2014 Fall World Premiere in Toronto, Canada, though discussions are still taking place with theatres there to solidify the idea.

All That Glitters is expected to be a grand production that meticulously captures the various stages of Liberace’s life and journey. It is a blend of drama and comedy that work together to tell the spectacular tale of the legendary man.
