K.D. Lang Makes Broadway Debut in ‘After Midnight’ in February

K.D. Lang will be making her Broadway debut in the stage production of After Midnight beginning February 11, 2014. Her stage run will continue through March 9, 2014. Lang’s guest stint in the production will follow that of Grammy Award winner Fantasia Barrino who will be the first guest headliner for the show.

As previously announced, accompanying Lang on the stage will be Tony Award winner Adriane Lenox reprising her performance in the production, as well as Tony Award nominees Desmond Richardson and Karine Plantadit. Grammy Award nominee Everett Bradley will also be a member of the cast.  Emmy Award nominee Dulé Hill will serve as “The Host”.

After Midnight is a celebration of Duke Ellington’s years at the Cotton Club using his original arrangements. Producers describe the show as “[Taking] the sexy, smoky glamour of the original Jazz Age and catapult[ing] it into a whole new era of heart-pounding, mind-blowing entertainment for modern Broadway audiences. Musical arrangements will be performed by a band of 17 musicians each hand picked by jazz legend Wynton Marsalis.

Marsalis recently shared in a statement, “In the Swing Era, jazz dominated the music charts for a reason: it’s sophisticated yet down-home, and people can get down for a profoundly good time while still being uplifted. Those things have never left our music, and Broadway is the perfect place to showcase to the world the contemporary relevance of swing.”

The production is directed and choreographed by Warren Carlyle and is produced by Scott Sanders Productions, and Wynton Marsalis in association with Marks-Turnbull Group; Stephen and Ruth Hendel; Tom Kirdahy. The show will mark the Broadway debut of fashion designer Isabel Toledo as well who is popularly known for designing First Lady Michelle Obama’s first inauguration dress. Other members of the creative team include Tony Award winner John Lee Beatty with set design, Tony Award winner Howell Binkley with lighting design, and Peter Hylenski with sound.

After Midnight has set an opening date for November 3.
