Michelle Williams to Star in Broadway’s ‘Cabaret’ Revival

Michelle Williams is expected to make her Broadway debut in the 2014 revival of the Kander and Ebb musical Cabaret. She will play the role of sexy nightclub singer Sally Bowles opposite Alan Cumming who was previously announced to play the role of Emcee, according to reports by The New York Times.

Cabaret is staged in 1930’s Berlin and tells the story of a lowdown nightclub where an ardent Emcee is in charge of what goes on at the Kit Kat Klub. In the midst of the action, a relationship between a youthful English performer and an American writer is established.

Though the Roundabout Theatre Company has yet to officially confirm Williams’ casting, should she play the part Williams will join a long line of greats who have played the sultry and iconic part of Sally Bowles on stage and on film. Such greats include Judi Dench, Brooke Shields and Liza Minnelli who won an Oscar for her performance in the film adaptation.

Williams herself is accredited in her own right in television and in film. She may be best known for her television role as Jen Lindley in “Dawson’s Creek” as well as film roles in “Brokeback Mountain”, “Blue Mountain”, and “My Week With Marilyn”; the latter two for which she received Oscar nominations. She has also appeared in off-Broadway productions of Smelling a Rat and Tracy Letts’ Killer Joe.

Caberet originally opened on Broadway in 1966 at the Broadhurst Theatre. The show’s last revival, which was produced by the Roundabout Theatre Company in 1998 and won a Tony Award starred Alan Cumming, Natasha Richardson, and Ron Rifkin.

It will once again be directed and co-directed/choreographed by Tony Award and Academy Award winners Sam Mendes and Rob Marshall. It features a book by Joe Masteroff and a Tony Award winning score written by John Kander and Fred Ebb which includes favorites such as “Don’t Tell Mama” and “So What”.
