Jessica Lange to Make Broadway Return in ‘Long Day’s Journey Into Night’

Jessica Lange will make her return to Broadway to star in the new production of the classic show Long Day’s Journey Into Night by Eugene O’Neill.

Lange made the announcement during an interview with the Los Angeles Times to promote the new season of the FX show “American Horror Story”. When questioned about her return to the theatre Lange responded, “Yes. Absolutely. In fact, we are going to do a production… about ten, no 12 years ago now, I did a production of what is probably my favorite play ever, of all time, Eugene O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey Into Night. And I am planning on doing that sometime in the next year, year and a half, back on Broadway.”

Previously, Lange starred in the show as the character Mary Tyrone in the year 2000 playing opposite Charles Dance. Then the show was directed by Robin Phillips. For her performance as the gripping heroin-addicted mother, Lange received an Olivier Award nomination.

Lange’s excitement to play the role again is no secret. She shared in an interview, “You know, it’s wonderful when you are able to create this character and then revisit it years later. Mary Tyrone is maybe my favorite character that — well, Blanche DuBois and Mary Tyrone — are my favorite characters that I have ever, ever played.”

Over the course of her career, Lange has accomplished much on stage, film, and television. She made her Broadway debut in 1992 in a production of A Streetcar Named Desire. She again returned to the stage in 2005 for a revival of the show The Glass Menagerie. Her film credits include roles in “Big Fish”, “Blue Sky”, “Grey Gardens”, “Prozac Nation”, “The Postman Always Rings Twice”, and “Tootsie”. She currently stars in the FX show “American Horror Story” which will begin it’s third season October 9.
