Broadway’s ‘Shrek’ Comes to Video in October

The Broadway production of Shrek the Musical will finally be making its way to the general public very soon. Based upon information coming from iTunes, the show will be available for download in October. This comes after the production wrapped its last performance January 3, 2010 after 37 previews and 441 performances.

The popularity and success of the DreamWorks animation film entitled Shrek (the first in the movie series) led to the idea for and creation of  a Broadway show. While based upon the film and the book by William Steig entitled Shrek!, the musical is a brand new take on the story we already know and love. Producers describe the show as “tell[ing] the story of a swamp-dwelling ogre who goes on a life-changing adventure to reclaim the deed to his land. Joined by a wise-cracking donkey, this unlikely hero fights a fearsome dragon, rescues a feisty princess and learns that real friendship and true love aren’t only found in fairy tales.”

Shrek the Musical has been a great success while on the Broadway stage. It was nominated for 8 Tony Awards in 2009 including Best Musical. It won for Best Costume Design of a Musical by Tim Hatley. The musical went on to receive Outer Critics Circle Awards in the categories of Outstanding Actor in a Musical, Outstanding Actress in a Musical, Outstanding Set Design, and Outstanding Costume Design. The show also received Drama Desk Awards in the categories of Outstanding Actor in a Musical, Outstanding Set Design, and Outstanding Costume Design.

The show is produced by DreamWorks Theatricals with Bill Damaschke as President and Neal Street Productions, Ltd with principals Sam Mendes and Caro Newling.

The popularity and success of the Broadway show only leaves the to expect that the release of the filmed production to the general public will be equally successful and greatly appreciated by those who were unable to view the show while it was on the stage.
