‘Glee’ Broadway Musical Still Full Steam Ahead
Young and old fans alike can rejoice at the recent announcement that a Glee Live Stage Musical is in the works. At 21 Century Fox’s first Investor Day, Fox TV co-head Gary Newman shared the information with shareholders according to the Hollywood Reporter. Newman was reported as saying, “We launched a live stage business with a sold-out arena concert tour in 2011, and now a live stage musical is in the works.”
The Broadway musical follows the hit that is Glee the television series which will be entering its 5th season September 26th at 9pm on FOX after being signed on for two more seasons. The show, which started in 2009, is an hour long musical festival which follows a high school Glee club and their personal lives/relationships which closely intertwine with the club itself.
In 2010, show co-creator shared that a Glee musical was definitely happening. Then bosses at Music Theatre Intl. announced in March they were in “negotiations” to turn the popular singing and dancing program into a New York stage production. But now it is official that the show will come to the Broadway stage.
The announcement comes not too long after the recent passing of Glee television star Cory Monteith who played the role of Finn, and serves as a drastic shift from the grief surrounding the situation. Though his passing which resulted from an overdose of a mix of heroin and alcohol still remains in the hearts and minds of executives, cast members, and fans alike, the Broadway musical poised to be an amazing tribute to him and the show.
There has yet to be any information released about possible cast members or a timeline of performances. Many wonder if Broadway veterans and show favorites Lea Michele, Darren Criss, and Matthew Morrison will star in title roles or if there will be an entirely new cast to appear on the big stage.
Regardless of who graces the stage, the show is sure to be energetic, exciting, and a more up close and personal version of the show that is so well loved.
