John O’Hurley Reprises Billy Flynn Role on ‘Chicago’ Tour

Having played the part numerous times, John O’Hurley will once again take on the role of lawyer Billy Flynn on the national tour of Chicago. He first appeared on Broadway as Flynn in 2006 and has played the role for the past 7 years, doing a 4-6 week run each year.

Chicago is the story of Roxie Hart who is vying for fame and notoriety. After murdering her secret lover, she ends up on death row. The play details Roxie’s journey to obtain freedom and stardom when she hires acclaimed attorney Billy Flynn. Flynn uses a set of tactics and tricks (which may or may not be moral) to help Roxie get where she wants to be, thus bolstering her reputation and his own. The story originates from reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins, who covered the trials of women accused of murder during the 1920’s.

O’Hurley has professed his adoration for the character Billy Flynn. He has been quoted as saying, “I love his elegance, style, and panache. I like playing both his sides and bringing out his subtleties.” In addition to being a show host and an actor, O’Hurley is also a composer and a pianist which allows him to bring a unique blend of talent to the role within this musical. His CD entitled Peace of Our Minds reached #13 on the Billboard Music Charts when it was released, serving as a tribute to his musical talent.

Popularly known for the role he played on Seinfeld as J. Peterman, O’Hurley’s credits extend far beyond that role. He played King Arthur in the Las Vegas and Los Angeles productions of Monty Python’s ‘Spamalot’. He has also had stints on Dancing with the Stars and Family Feud.

The Kander and Ebb classic production is directed by Walter Bobbie and choreographed by Ann Reinking. Other contributors include Scenic Designer John Lee Beatty, Costume Designer William Ivy Long, Lighting Designer Ken Billington, and Sound Designer Scott Lehrer.
