Motown: The Musical New York | Lunt-Fontanne Theatre

The hustle and bustle of Detroit is headed to the east coast in spring 2013 for the premiere of ‘Motown: The Musical’ in the Great White Way. The groundbreaking hits of The Supremes, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, the Jackson Five and other iconic soul artists will light up the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre as it tells the rags-to-riches tale of Motown founder Berry Gordy, Jr. The musical, with a book by Berry Gordy, Jr., music from the rich and colorful Motown catalog and direction from Charles Randolph-Wright will premiere on April 14, 2013, with preview performances beginning March 11th.

From a featherweight prizefighter to a music mogul all in a class of his own, Berry Gordy, Jr. transformed Detroit and cemented it in music history as the birthplace of Motown, the record company he founded which paved the way for music legends such as The Supremes and Diana Ross, Jackson Five and Michael Jackson, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and many others. His eye for talent, charisma and business savvy not only gave the famous automotive capital another nickname and a seat at the pop music throne, but also brought to the spotlight the real but redeeming struggles of African American artists back in the ‘60s. The success stories of these legendary artists are not only a testament to the universal power of music –relatable, catchy and infectious soul music, that is – to break social and cultural barriers, shift perspectives, create new and lasting trends, stir hope and inspire great change among people, but also a testament to Gordy’s undeniably massive and enduring influence and legacy, as his own inspiring journey inspired his protégés to become stars in their own rights, making them the face of a record label that changed and redefined popular music forever.
