Memphis Pittsburgh | Heinz Hall

Memphis Pittsburgh | Heinz Hall

‘Memphis’, the Tony Award winning musical about how rock n’ roll music and African American musicians broke through into the mainstream music scene and popular culture is heading to Pittsburgh for a one-week run right around the New Years, from December 27, 2011 to January 1, 2012 at the Heinz Hall.

Inspired by real events at a time where the Civil Rights Movement was still in its infancy, ‘Memphis’ is a story of love and music transcending race and social discrimination during the ‘50s. When an innovative white DJ who used to play songs that only white folks could enjoy suddenly samples rock n’ roll and African American rhythms and beats, infused with the soulful voice of an aspiring black songstress, all hell breaks loose, the once underground musical genre that was only played in hush tones gradually gained more airtime and his vision and her voice were a perfect match made in music heaven, well, not instantly. It would take a leap of faith and love, an ounce of energizing and electrifying music and a dash of laughter to overcome the hurdle that is discrimination and prejudice.

‘Memphis’ bagged four Tony Awards in 2010, including Best Musical, Best Book for Joe DiPietro, Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations. End 2011 and start 2012 the right way – the rock n’ roll way – with ‘Memphis’ at the Heinz Hall.
