Hair San Diego | San Diego Civic Theatre

Hair San Diego | San Diego Civic Theatre

It’s young, fresh, and raw, this is the Tony Award winning revival of ‘Hair’, the groundbreaking musical that is as timely as it was when it first premiered in Broadway in the late ‘60s. And this highly celebrated musical about a cultural revolution that spawned about half a century ago will be flipping its hair and dancing its way at the same time to the bay area, for a week-long run at the Civic Theatre in San Diego this fall.

‘Hair’ fueled a cultural consciousness and revolution that will go on for decades, amidst the changing political, social and economical landscapes and trends. With songs like ‘Aquarius’, ‘Good Morning, Starshine’, ‘Let the Sun Shine In’ and ‘Easy to be Hard’, this musical sparks up optimism and vibrancy in every dialogue, song and act. Written during the time of the Vietnam War, where American males were forced to enlist in the military, ‘Hair’ continues to be just as relevant today. A war may not be imminent but political and socio-economic strife continue to befuddle both the young and old, it may be easy to be hard but all will be alright once we let the sun shine in.

Armed with a talented cast which “show no signs of becoming domesticated” (The New York Times), plus a “colorfully kinetic” (New York Daily News) choreography, so kinetic, it may appear as if the cast is dancing right in your face, this musical “has emerged triumphant”, as the New York Post puts it. As a revival, Variety writes that ‘Hair’ “could have been a mere nostalgia instead becomes a full-immersion happening”, adding that the new production and the cast “connect with the material in ways that cut right to the 1967 rock musical’s heart, generating tremendous energy that radiates to the rafters”.

‘Hair’ runs at the Civic Theatre from October 18 to 23, 2011 with show times at 7 PM on Tuesday and Wednesday, 7:30 PM on Thursday, 8 PM on Friday and Saturday, and 6 PM on Sunday. Matinee performances are at 2 PM on Saturday (sign language interpreted) and at 1 PM on Sunday (open captioned).
