Gather up idiots for the Tony Award winning and groundbreaking musical ‘American Idiot’ heads to San Diego in summer 2013 for a week-long run at the Civic Theatre from May 28 to June 2. The musical comes from the artistic geniuses of Michael Mayer, Tony winning director of the coming-of-age musical ‘Spring Awakening’, and Billie Joe Armstrong, front man and main songwriter of the Grammy Award winning rock group Green Day.

‘American Idiot’ is inspired by two of Green Day’s most recent albums, the critically acclaimed and politically and socially themed ‘American Idiot’ and ‘21st Century Breakdown’. Songs from the albums such as ‘Boulevard of Broken Dreams’, ’21 Guns’ and ‘Wake Me Up When September Ends’ are performed in the musical as it tells the story of three lifelong buddies faced with the ultimate choice between the familiar and the uncertain, in a time where institutions crumble at the mercy of terrorists and the time and face of the deadly attacks are random, such as the 9/11 attacks. Their decision will spell the difference between a promising change in their lives or mundane and bland stability, and they have to act sooner if not later, for if there’s one important lesson every terrorist attack should impart, is that life is short and can be taken away in a blink of an eye, and even the smartest of men can be idiots for not making each day count.

Show times for the San Diego engagement of ‘American Idiot’ are at 7 PM on May 28 and 29, 7:30 PM on May 30, 8 PM on May 31 and June 1, and 6 PM on June 2. Matinee performances are at 2 PM on June 1 and 1 PM on June 2.
